Darjeeling esta al noreste de India, pegado a la frontera de Nepal. Subir hasta los 2200m, donde esta la ciudad, no fue facil, pero valio la pena solo para escapar, los hospitales, calor y polucion, de Calcuta. El plan era hacer un trekking por las montanas vecinas y poder disfrutar la panoramica de los Himalayas, en concreto, del Kanchenzdonga (8500 y pico metros. La 3 montana mas alta del mundo). Pero los dioses hindus siguieron sin estar de nuestra parte.El viaje hasta ahi no le sento muy bien a Siri, que no acabo de recuperarse hasta que nos fuimos, y decidimos que era mejor no hacer el treking. Aparte, el tiempo tampoc acompano mucho y los 5 dias que pasamos en Darjeeling estubimos rodeados por niebla, que como mucho nos dejo ver a 20 metros de distancia. Asi que tampoco hubo manera de disfrutar de la vista.
Nos conformamos con alternar descanso con algunos paseitos por las calles de la ciudad. Darjeeling en si no es muy bonito, pero me puedo imaginar que la vista es espectacular, porque toda la ciudad esta esparcida en lo alto de dos valles. Sus calles se enredan entre si para subir hasta a la plaza principal y, aunque orientarse no es facil, es divertido meterse por callejuelas o escaleras que ascienden o descienden dramaticamente. Improvisando un poco vas descubriendo diferentes partes de la ciudad.
Darjeeling its on northeast India, close to the Nepali border. Climbing the 2200m to the city, wasn't easy, but it was well worth it just to escape the hospitals, heat and pollution, of Kolkata. The plan was to trek some days trough the surroundings mountians and enjoy the panoramic views of the Himalayas, right at the foot of the Kanchenzdonga (8500m the third highest mountain in the world). BUT the hindu gods stayed away from our side.
The journey up there wasn't nice with Siri, that didn't fully recover until we left, therefore we decided it was wiser no to do the trek. Furthermore, the weather wasn't colaborating either. The 5 days we spent in Darjeeling where completely covered by a thik fog, that luckly, sometimes, allowed us to see some meters ahead.
We decided to just take some rest and gently walk around the city. Darjeeling is not very beautiful, but I can imagine the views are amazing, because the whole city scaters trough the top of two valleys. Its streets winde to the central top square and its fun to just take any given alley or stairs dramaticly going up or down the city. Improvising you end up discovering different areas of the city.
Un dia, mientras Siri se quedo descansando en la habitacion, decidi explorar algunas de las atraciones turisticas de Darjeeling. Me llevo todo el dia, andando arriba y abajo de los alrededores, visitar todo lo que habia planeado. Empeze por una visita rapida a una Gompa (Templo) Tibetano, tenia que ser espectacular, pero a mi solo me parecion divertido por sus diferencias con los del sureste asiatico. Paseando por el bosque llegue, acompanado de una viejecita, hasta un centro de refugiados tibetanos, donde una vez mas confronte su triste situacion. Se alegraron mucho de saber que era Catalan! Despues de terminar mi ultimo libro "la vida de Pi", donde un Tigre de Bengal es uno de los protagonistas principales, me vi obligado a visitar uno en el zoo mas alto del mundo. Lo llegue a tener a menos de medio metro, increible!! Tambien descubri que los Yaks son enormes! Finalmente visite el Happy Valley tea plantations, una plantacion y fabrica del, supuestamente, mejor te del mundo...One day while Siri stayed in our cousy room resting I decided to explore some of the tourist atractions of Darjeeling. It took me a whole day of walking up and down the surroundings to visit all I had planned. I started by a quick visit to a Tibentan Gompa (temple) supose to be amazing, but, to me, it was only funny to see because it was so different to the ones in Southeast Asia. I continued with a nice walk trough the forest to a Tibetan refugee camp where I faced once again their sad situation, they were happy to know I was Catalan!! After I had finished my last book "life of Pi", where a Bengal Tiger is one of the main characters, I was force to visit one in the highest zoo in the world, got about half a meter away of it, just amazing! I also found out that Yaks are huge. Finally I visited the Happy Valley tea plantations, that was just a big tea factory where the best tea in the world is supose to grow...
Como cualquier lugar de India, Darjeeling tambien ofrecio situaciones y personajes divertidos! Una pequena cata...y un abrazo!
